Nike Unveils First Indian Design Collaboration Inspired by Ancient Tie-Dyeing
Nike has launched its inaugural design collaboration with an Indian artist, paying homage to a 5,000-year-old tie-dyeing technique. The collection, designed in partnership with Delhi-based artist, Raoul, centers around the traditional Bandhani dyeing method, which originated in the Kutch region of Gujarat.
Bandhani, derived from the Sanskrit word “bandha” meaning “to tie,” involves resist-dyeing fabric that is tightly bound with thread to create intricate patterns. This meticulous process results in textiles adorned with a multitude of tiny, unbound dots.
Raoul, known for his brand DELhI-based Raoul Studio, brings a contemporary perspective to this ancient craft. The Nike collaboration features apparel and footwear showcasing vibrant colors and elaborate Bandhani patterns. According to Nike, the partnership aims to celebrate India’s rich heritage while pushing the boundaries of modern design.
The collection includes reimagined versions of classic Nike silhouettes, such as the Air Max and Blazer, incorporating Bandhani-inspired detailing. Apparel pieces range from t-shirts and hoodies to jackets and pants, all featuring unique tie-dye motifs. The color palettes draw inspiration from the natural dyes traditionally used in Bandhani, including indigo, turmeric, and madder root.
Nike stated that this collaboration represents a significant step in its commitment to fostering creativity and cultural exchange within the Indian market. By partnering with local artists and artisans, Nike seeks to amplify authentic voices and showcase India’s diverse artistic traditions on a global stage.
Raoul expressed his excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the opportunity to blend traditional Indian craftsmanship with Nike’s innovative design ethos. He hopes the collection will inspire a new generation to embrace and celebrate their cultural heritage.
The Nike x Raoul collection is set to launch in select stores and online, offering a unique fusion of heritage and contemporary style. This collaboration not only highlights the beauty of Bandhani but also underscores the growing importance of collaborations that bridge the gap between global brands and local artisans.
